The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
