During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
