The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Dreams to Tournament Favorites.
As I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
