Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also included leaders in various fields.
