SNAP Payments Expected to Expire for Tens of Millions During Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities announced this past weekend that monthly food benefits under one of the country’s largest support systems are not going out during the coming month because of the continuing federal closure.

Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure was in its 25th day as officials revealed the news, which followed calls from over 200 Democratic representatives asking agriculture officials to utilize emergency reserves to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“The reality is, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “At this time, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

National Consequences

More than 41 million individuals rely on the regular assistance, according to the USDA. In certain states, including New Mexico, dependence on this assistance reaches 21% of residents.

A memo obtained by Reuters indicated that federal authorities decided against using emergency reserves for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked about the way to support and resume government operations.

Remarks from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that the White House had opportunities to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.

“They had the ability and responsibility acted earlier to be prepared to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to influence Democratic senators to approve a spending bill that would resume the federal government.

Local Responses

State leaders from Louisiana and Virginia issued emergency declarations this week to make money available to combat potential hunger expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
