Israelis have come together across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"The aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the agreement.

A senior delegate familiar with the talks said that an late session of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The official stated the morning session ended without significant progress, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict administration of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until every captive come back no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to show their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist one woman stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening comes, the dread comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area said it had received the remains of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said two more victims had been transported. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, medics stated.
