The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.

We are checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
