As Swimmers Escaped Attack, Popular Picture Shows Rescuer Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, like many others in the area, heard pops reverberating across the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her something was wrong.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the hill soaked, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone running in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and without footwear … He moved at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Chaos

The photograph that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of instances of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and medical teams caring for dozens of the injured.

Community Response and Support

Doolan’s account was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the location of the incident becoming a impromptu hospital. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, for instance entering the ocean to assist people who were struggling.

Following the events, statements of gratitude flooded in. A social media message expressed appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always conquer evil”.

The squad of rescuers later shared a communication, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are touched by the care directed at our team,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent lifeguards, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the violence commenced until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many powerful stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on that day should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and process the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
